Firsts and Favorites

Every year many photographers do a post on their top images from the previous year.
It's fun to look back on what you've done in the year,
but incredibly hard to narrow down your images to just a few. These may not be my best images, but as usual, I seem to like the ones that I have a personal connection to.

Photography to me, is very much about exploring new places and having new experiences.

It is mainly those experiences that will elevate an image to make my top list of the year, and so as I've traveled this year, many of my favorites are not just from Idaho locations.

In January, a trip to Bellingham, Washington where I would leave my son to embark on the next stage of his life. Not really knowing what lie ahead, this predawn shot of the Bellingham pier reflects the transition and reflective mood I was feeling at the time.

My first visit to Rowena Dell in Oregon, and even though the flowers were dancing in the wind, I really like this scene.

Representing my favorite season, this autumn trail in Zion National Park was a very slow walk for me, as I had to stop and photograph each new bend in the trail.

Taken the day of the eathquake in Japan, a world away on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille, ID. I was thinking a lot about what was going on in Japan. I titled this image "Hope" and donated profits from the sale of this print to The Red Cross relief efforts.

waiting for Sunset on the Palouse.

Arriving mid day at this popular photo spot in Grand Teton National Park,
I didn't expect to photograph at all. A steady stream of photographers were leaving as the rain started coming down. I decided to walk out to the ponds anyway, and after a short wait under a tree, it stopped raining and I had the place all to myself.

Standing amongst thousands of daisies in the pink morning light as the sun and mist rose above the Snake River in Island Park, Idaho. An amazingly beautiful place to start a day.

I love places like this. These rain water pools on the Arizona Strip could have entertained me for hours...even though I'd never seen the Grand Canyon only minutes away.

Silver Creek in the Central Cascades of Washington state slides through lush green forests and represents my love of the creeks and trees of the Pacific Northwest.

First time I've attended a balloon festival. Something that has long been on my to do list. Prosser Balloon Rally.

The first time I ever camped by myself. Pre dawn light over a pond on the Red Rock Lakes Wildlife Preserve in Southwest Montana.
I listened to coyotes howl and discovered my own independence.

Frozen frost covered trees along the Pend Oreille River in northeast Washington.
An atmospheric scene of calm and cold.

A Sandstone puzzle on the rim of the Grand Canyon.

My first visit with some great memories created.

Chasing the Light

I need to stop chasing the light.

"Chasing the Light" a popular phrase in landscape photography, has become too literal to me.

No I'm not giving up photography.
It is in the interest of bettering my photography, that I say this.
No more, leaving the house after the light looks good.
No more driving around like a mad woman hoping the stoplight doesn't change red before I get through it.
No more searching out subject matter that "will do".

No more adjusting my camera settings while I drive.

No waiting for whoever thinks they're going with me.

No jumping from the vehicle, struggling with my tripod, as the sun dips below the horizon.
No more racing up a mountain, trying to be faster than the sun setting behind a different one.

There will be no more chasing the light.

I will already be there. I will know where "there" is, in advance. I will go by myself.
I will drive safer. I will be at peace. I will enjoy the experience.

I WILL be a better photographer.

From this day forward, whenever possible,

I will "Wait for the Light".

Top 12 of 2010

Many photographers post a yearly top ten list, usually around the first of a new year. I've always meant to participate, but never have. I know I'm late to the game this year, but still thought I'd go ahead and post my favorites. I don't know if there are any rules to this...I've seen top 10 posts on everything from best selling to most popular based on facebook feedback.
I'm just going with personal preferences, but most all of them I feel deeply connected to based on the experience of being in that particular place and time.
I stopped myself at 12.

I had an October morning at Mt. Shuksan for a couple of hours all to myself. There had been a light overnight snowfall, huckleberries were ripe, views were amazing, atmosphere was spectacular and silence was grand. An easy favorite.

On the same autumn weekend, a walk along Whatcom Creek in the lush green of Whatcom Falls Park, Bellingham.
I was blown away by the beauty of this place. This moss covered tree clinging to life on the creek bank, with its roots visable above and below water and the
contrasting red of the fallen leaves is very intriguing to me.

My first visit to Teton National Park where I was actually there for photography. While the experience of shooting elbow to elbow with other photographers is nothing I'm excited to do again, there is no denying the majesty of this place.
I took this shot after the masses left,
but the morning sun had not yet reached the trees or river.

The color layers on this shot of the Purcell Mountains in North Idaho is what I love about it. I took this on my birthday,
along with the next two. A very nice day of photography.

This is the Bull River Valley in Western Montana. I had fun here watching the sun set several times, just by repositioning myself. I loved that beam of light hitting the gold patch of western larch. I don't think it's an exceptional shot but knowing I took it at the end of a truly great day is why it makes my list.

Finding this patch of planted trees with perfect repetitious spacing to create a seemingly endless view was thrilling. I've been looking for such a location for a long time.

Photographed millions of times from this vantage point, St. Marys Lake in Glacier National Park makes my list for the unforgettable memory of a close encounter with a black bear within moments of taking this shot, and the beam of light that emerged from the clouds after enduring drenching rains and howling winds,
which made it all worthwile.

I caught a glimpse of the green forest floor from the road in the Coeur d'Alene Mountains, and stopped to investigate. It was raining, and everything was wet. I liked this composition, but when for just a brief moment, the sun broke through and created these beams of light, it truly was magical.

I love the mood of this shot of the old pilings in Wolf Lodge Bay. Shooting when the sunlight is so naturally filtered can be amazing. Sloshing around in the mud, can make you feel 30 years younger.

I love getting a good sunstar without the accompanying lens flare. This one in the golden aspens of Teton National Park is one of my favorites.

Water is one of my favorite subjects, and this springtime shot of Beauty Creek makes my list just because of the time I spent there listening to the stream, enjoying the coolness and waiting for the sunlight to soften on the water. I could have stayed for hours.

This image I am trying to decipher as I type this.There is something contradicting about the calm mood of the water under a sky in turmoil. I think the blue is full of emotion and the flower wisps represent a bit of hope. Maybe that was all a little sappy, but it speaks to me. A well know spot in my town, a yet it could be anywhere, and few recognize it. I like those type of shots.

So there they are. Not my best, most popular or most sold. I guess that's why they are personal favorites.

Mid Winter Blues

January....My least favorite month of the year. And it has nothing to do with snow or cold temperatures.
I've always fought a bit of January depression.

It's not as bad, now that I've found my purpose in photography, but still, with taxes looming and the evergrowing list of things that weren't accomplished last year, it takes a bit of resolve to get through these winter months.

On the up side, for me as a photographer, fresh snow is quite literally a gift from above.

I can't begin to explain the joy of searching out a photo opportunity and finding one after an overnight snowfall.

Those sub-zero temperatures make the waterways steam beautifully in the morning sun.

They create shoreline ice sculptures.

Additionally the shorter hours of winter actually provide longer hours of prime low angle lighting,

so important to good landscape photography.

I was also fortunate enough to have a little mid January getaway to the North Puget Sound area.

A change of scenery is therapy for my soul!

I would be more than happy to have another good snowfall before spring.
I guess that's why I was born and live in North Idaho.

Autumn Roundup

As the colors fade and snow is in the forecast, I thought I'd assemble a few shots from this autumn season.
I worked overtime the last couple of months (loving every second of it),

and tried not to let a single opportunity slip by.

Last year's colors were miserable in North Idaho, due to an early freeze, so I was eager to make the most of this fall,
my favorite season.

I hope to do it again next year.

Pilings or No Pilings?

~A Photographers Perspective~
As controversy and litigation surround the removal of pilings on Cougar Bay, of Lake Coeur d'Alene; fighting over Osprey habitat and motorboats, of which I thought I had no opinion....my thoughts turn to all the photographs I have taken over the years in our piling filled bays.

Yesterday I returned to a favorite photo haunt to discover the absence of my favorite weathered pilings that jutted from the bay.

I'm sure it seems odd that anyone would have favorite pieces of ragged,
protruding wood in a lake, but I did.
They were the ones in the photo below.

On a nearby dock stood the CDA press photographer waiting for a ride on a tugboat, to shoot for todays

Twin Silhouettes

As the boat transported him out to the working equipment,
I photographed the tug passing that very spot again and realized in an instant that the whole scene had lost something vital from a photographic standpoint.

I watched from a distance with a bit of sadness,
the removal process, as equipment pushed over one piling at a time,
and then plucked it from the depths.

Without me even realizing it, these pilings have been a reminder of the history of our region and a
connection to the past.

I started this post sometime in May, and today is the day...I SHALL finish it! Beyond that I have set a new goal of blogging at least once a month and it will go on my desk planner. The self imposed rules in my office state..."If it's on the desk planner...it must be done!" Of course there is always the possibility that the boss could over ride the rules...I think I've discovered a glitch in my system.

We have experienced what I would imagine must have been one of the wettest Springs on record here in North Idaho. On a positive note, there were many evenings when the sun would break through just at sunset for some amazing displays of sky color and super saturated landscapes. During April, May and June, I 've visited the Palouse, Hood River Oregon, Bonners Ferry, Chewelah and the remote Northeast corner of Washington. But the majority of my shoots have been right here in my beautiful hometown of Coeur d'Alene.

Recently I've been receiving some much appreciated promotion from Blogmaster D.F. Oliveria of Huckleberries Online at the Spokesman Review. If you're not a Berry picker, you should be....lots of thought provoking articles, great images and the most interesting scanner traffic...I had no idea there were so many odd happenings in my town.

The far Northeast corner of Washington state is a rugged and scenic area in which I am hoping to spend some time camping and exploring.

I did some scouting in June and look forward to a return trip.

I meant to post about my two trips to Boise, and everything in between, but since I am so far behind, I am just going to do a brief coverage of the last few months.

This old house is one of my favorites from the New Meadows area in February,

as is the solitary tree.

So, thats a brief run down on my shoots.

I am now being represented by Angel Gallery, here in Coeur d'Alene, and will have art in the Groove Studio in Bonners Ferry around the middle of May.

This steam train image made the final cut for exhibitions in

California and Australia. (the only two times I have submitted images to such events)

They both open this summer.

I donated Tugboat in the Mist

to the Au$um Auction benefitting the Coeur d'Alene Chamber, and held at the Coeur d'Alene Resort on May 1st.

A snowless winter....

Amazingly we have had no snow since I posted last, sometime before Christmas. Had I know then, that one morning at the lake was going to be my only chance at the white stuff....

I'd have worked that scene for a lot longer than I did!

So, in an attempt to make the most of a snowless winter, I have decided to embrace this non-traditional winter shooting. All shooting has been local the last couple of months, but it has been a good opportunity to increase my hometown coverage.

Although I might be able to pass these off as a different season, they do seem to have a different look to them.

Maybe it's the simple fact that there isn't much lake traffic this time of year, or tourists to contend with,

because these shoots have really felt as

quiet and tranquil as the images look.

I am pleased to announce I will soon be represented by a downtown gallery.

A selection of framed prints will be available around the 1st of April.

The gallery has specifically requested that I supply them with identifiable local art landscapes.

Here is some of the only snow I've found over the last two months.

Near the top of Fourth of July Pass.

I'm not complaining...as I realize many parts of the country are currently crippled by the stuff. We had record setting snowfall last year. I just miss it a little....and of course this is the year

I finally got snowshoes.

Well I am excited to make a leisurely, albeit brief trip to the Boise area with a night in the McCall area both coming and going. I am delivering my youngest son to the State Capitol to serve for six weeks as a page to the State Legislature.

Winter shooting is off to a slow start, but I'm hopeful for some good snowscapes soon. We did have some short lived snow that I managed a nice morning shoot at the lake.

I did these long exposures looking over the crowds on the resort lawn during the Christmas lighting ceremony.

You'll find this image from last winters record snowfall in the December issue of Spokane Coeur d'Alene Living magazine.

I finally found what book one of my images was used
on the cover of.

Here is the pre-manipulated image of a trestle along the

Pend Oreille River.

I also visited the Turnbull Wildlife Refuge south of Cheney, Washington during our extreme cold spell a few weeks back.

The day I was there had heavy cloud cover with rather flat lighting, but the ice, polished from the wind, was rather cool.

I am looking forward to exploring this area in more detail at different times of year.

Well it's been awhile since I did one of these news posts, so I have probably forgot plenty of whats happened over the last few months...

Fresh in my mind- I am one of the newest members of the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce

I am starting out by providing them with some images for their 2010 publications, and am hoping it will be a long and productive association.

As we enter the holiday season,
I thougth I'd share this image of my hometown.

I feel it perfectly captures the transition from Fall to Winter and the anticipation of Christmas.

I attended the open house and ribbon cutting ceremony of the new Kootenai Cancer Center in Post Falls on Nov. 7th.

What a beautiful facility!
The 15 pieces of art that I have hanging there are in good company with beautiful sculptures, paintings and a few other photographers work.
The building itself is quite artistic.

I recently joined the NPN(Nature Photographers Network) and probably should have done it sooner. I will have a small portfolio with them, but if what they say rings true.... they get seen by a lot of the right clients.

Now I just need to figure out what to sew my membership patch onto.

I discovered a fabulous chocolate shop that anyone in

Whitefish and More....

Last time I posted, I was feeling cheated out of fall colors, but luckily, not all was lost of the autumn season. The tamaracks cooperated and I did find a few tucked away patches of color that had been spared the freezing temps.

In mid October I traveled to Whitefish, Montana to take my beautiful nieces' senior photos. Not my usual type of photography, it was a very sucessful shoot, and I enjoyed the scenery tremendously. Driving by Flathead Lake, the water was glassy calm and covered in a combination of smoke and clouds that gave a surreal appearance.

The snowcapped Mission Mountains were stunningly beautiful...

In the pre-dawn light we happened upon the historic Southern Pacific Daylight 4449 at the Whitefish station. On its return to Portland, Oregon after a cross country excursion, I had no idea of it's significance until looking it up when I got home.

We used this old truck as a prop in some of the senoir photos,

but it has also turned into a popular art print.

...there are about 12 of them so far.

Some better than others.

What happened to fall?

Sadly, it is becoming evident that we are not going to get a good display of fall colors this year around the Coeur d'Alene area. An early freeze seems to have killed the leaves before they could change colors.

This river image shows what I mean....the trees just look dead.

I went down on the St. Joe twice recently,

once by car, arriving before the sunrise, and again on a tour boat.

This is Falls Creek Falls right beside highway 50.

I caught this shot from the boat as we left Independence Point for what ended up being a very long day.

There is just something about September sunsets... I have been noticing for several years now there seems to be a lot of lavendar skies in September.

I stayed in town one clear morning and felt like a voyeur taking pictures over and through fences, just trying to get a view of the lake.

I'm quite happy with this Spokane River shot, and think it will remain one of my all-time favorites. Suprisingly I didn't think much of it when I shot it and only spent a few minutes on it, taking only a couple different exposures.

I found this canoe scene one morning and hope it is still there for a foggy day shot.

This last month has been quite productive and according to my lightroom stats, I shot 16 out of 30 days in the month of September.

This was overlooking the valleys to the East in the Coeur d'Alene Mountains after a night of rain.

Looking forward to a trip into Montana soon and hoping they have better fall colors than here in North Idaho.

Glacier Park, Waterfalls and around North Idaho

I haven't done as much shooting this last half of the summer as I would have liked, but I have been "minding the store" so to speak and have some exciting things happening.

A book publisher has selected a large number of my images for use in a local interest book, and my largest art installation to date, is being hung in the near future. Here are two of the largest pieces.

I wouldn't mind a little feedback on this river rock image. It's probably one of those "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" type of shots. I found it intriguing..in fact I made a set of three images. (I probably just waited so long on the riverbank while Ted was fishing, that the weeds started looking artistic)

Ted and I managed to get away for a weekend in Glacier National Park for which we had some beautiful weather. Not particularly the type of weather I like for photography...so I tried to be a tourist. But still...how could anyone go to Glacier and not get some nice shots.

I wish I could have been at Saint Marys Lake at sunrise, but we were camped on the opposite side of the park, so we bought a annual pass and will plan on that for next year.

Our campground was great though..

Going to the Sun Road...while under construction...was as creepy as I remembered it and its been about 15 years.

We went out for some waterfalls twice this month...once up the Coeur d'Alene River, and again to Bonners Ferry.

While I've never found waterfall shots to be in high demand...they remain one of my favorite things to shoot.

I'ts been killing me to miss all these great sunsets lately, but I did get out for a few....these on the Rathdrum Prairie,

and these on Lakes Coeur d'Alene...

and Pend Oreille..

The family spent one night way up the St. Joe River, so far in fact... we returned home through the Bitterroots by going over Gold Summit and into Montana.

This shot of the river is a five second exposure with a 4-stop Neutral density filter...to allow for some movement in the water.

The guys picked berries on Gold Summit and I photographed them.

We spent another day looping Lake Pend Oreille.

Ted caved to my whining one moody afternoon

and went with me to Wolf Lodge Bay.

I wasn't planning on getting wet...but I had to for this shot.
